A Tale of Misogyny and Systemic Abuse
Cheeky, quirky, and unapologetic, Butterfly is an illustrated poem narrating the experience of a woman who comes forward with allegations of sexual harassment to be met with gaslighting. In a multilayered, graphic style, Elfie Kalfakis illustrates the various narratives involved in this highly contentious – and all too common – social circumstance.
The poem is a sassy and satirical interpretation of what many people face when coming forward with allegations, especially in the workplace. It is accompanied by comical drawings filled with sarcastic details. Layered onto these illustrations is a parallel narrative: that of a caterpillar and it’s metamorphosis into a butterfly.
Kalfakis’ adult picture book brings to life the effects and highlights the trauma caused when misogyny and systemic abuse are left unchecked in the workplace.
